Xigris is used to treat Sepsis, a life-threatening bacterial blood infection, in adults. It is similar to a natural protein produced by the body. Xigris can reduce inflammation and the formation of blood clots in blood vessels in Sepsis patients. Xigris increases the breakdown of blood clots as well. In spite of an FDA advisory panel's split decision on whether or not to recommend approval, U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the drug in November 2001. FDA has asked the drug maker Eli Lilly and Co. to carry out a number of extra trials. This includes a study of adult patients with severe sepsis who were at little risk of death.
