An upscale food markets group, which cheated hundreds of its employees out of overtime wages for years, will pay the workers $1.5 million as part of a settlement with the New York State Department of Labor.

The investigation of the Labor Department was prompted by a tip from union officials who were organizing the workers at Amish Market outlets around the city. The Labor Department found that there were overtime violations at nine stores from at least six years back, involving 550 workers.

United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1500 found the problems during an organizing drive and complained to the Labor Department. According to the investigators, there were prevalent violations, including numerous workers clocking between 45 and 60 hours a week who were not paid time-and-a-half for their overtime, as mandated by law.

According to officials, present and previous employees will receive payments ranging from many hundreds of dollars to as much as 10,000 US$. An employee, who was fired as he cooperated with investigators, will receive approximately $26,000 in lost wages and omitted tips.

An Amish Market owner didn’t comment.
