TX - A Jefferson County man, who was a long-term employee of chemical giant Texaco, claims that he developed blood cancer and multiple myeloma after being exposed to benzene during his job. Mark Majors and his wife, Sylvia, have filed a lawsuit against American Cyanamid and 27 other companies on January 14 in Jefferson County District Court. According to the lawsuit, the companies negligently exposed Majors to benzene even though they were aware of its hazards. Cytec, Texaco, TRMI Holdings, Wyeth Holdings, Amoco Chemical Co., Amoco Oil Co., Atlantic Richfield Co., B.P. Amoco Chemical Co., B.P. Products North America, Chevron, Exxon Mobil, Exxon Mobil Oil Corp., Mallinckrodt Baker, Mallickrodt, McKesson Corp., McKesson HBOC, Sabine Towing and Transportation, Sequia Corp., Shell, Shell Chemical, Shell Oil, Union Oil Company of California, Univar, Fisher Scientific Co. and Fisher Scientific International are the other defendants named in the complaint. According to the complaint, Majors was occupationally exposed to a number of toxic chemicals including benzene while working at the Port Neches chemical plant through the late 1970s. The complaint states that an aromatic distillate product manufactured at the plant contained elevated amounts of benzene. The couple argues that Majors developed blood cancer and multiple myeloma as a result of exposure to benzene and a number of other carcinogenic chemicals. The complaint states that the companies failed to warn customers and workers of the health risks associated with benzene in spite of having clear knowledge. The plaintiffs are seeking damages for Mark Major’s past and future medical costs, mental anguish, pain, impairment, disfigurement and lost wages and for Sylvia Major’s mental anguish, medical expenses, loss of her husband’s society and household services and expenses for nursing care. The case will be presided over by Judge Gary Sanderson, 60th District Court.
