The two sons of a deceased man are suing their father’s employers, claiming that their father developed multiple myeloma due to benzene exposure from workplace. George K. Kleepsies and Glen Kleepsies have filed a lawsuit against Union Oil Company of California (Unocal) and Chevron on May 18 in Jefferson County District Court. According to the plaintiffs, their father, George T. Kleepsies, worked for Pure Oil (presently known as Unocal) and Chevron and he was exposed to benzene and benzene products all through his career. As a result of this exposure, George T. Kleepsies developed the multiple myeloma and died a terrible and painful death on Feb. 8, according to the complaint. The Kleepsies argue that the defendants were aware that the products around which George T. Kleepsies worked could cause cancer but still allowed him and other employees to work around the products. Additionally, the companies failed to warn their workers of the hazards of benzene exposure and to take adequate safety measure to ensure that George T. Kleepsies was not exposed to cancer-causing substances, the complaint states. The plaintiffs are seeking punitive and exemplary damages, in addition to interests at legal rate, costs and other relief to which they may be entitled.
