According to the documents from the Federal Health and Ageing Department in Australia, an Australian infant was born deaf and blind in November 2005 following the mother was given facial cosmetic injections of the drug Dysport. The documents, released under Freedom of Information, say that the drug was given in the first week of pregnancy. Both Dysport and Botox are botulinum type A toxin drugs rapidly rising in popularity as muscle-relaxant cosmetic treatments. Since 1994, 46 different adverse reactions of botulinum type A toxin has been reported to Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration. The birth defect link is one among them. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has informed the public in 2008 that Botox and Myobloc, a similar drug, have been linked to undesirable effects, including respiratory failure and even death. Visual disturbances, fatigue, dizziness, difficulty swallowing, hallucinations, anxiety and temporary facial paralysis are some of the side effects of Botox.
