According to a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 15 brands of infant formula products sold in the United States are contaminated with perchlorate, a dangerous chemical also used in rocket fuel. The study has been published in the March issue of the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology. The researchers found that the most contaminated brands are lactose-based as opposed to soy-based and account for 87% of the infant formulas in the U.S. market. However, name of the brands are not mentioned in the study. But it raises concerns that most formula-fed babies have been exposed to the chemical. According to reports, highest levels were found in the cow’s milk formula products. However, the EPA says that there is nothing to worry as the levels of perchlorate are small and so not hazardous to babies. Some advocacy groups say that perchlorate has also been found in drinking water in 35 states. This can be more dangerous as the amount of perchlorate can increase to an unsafe level when the formula is mixed with water.
