UTICA, NY – The lad-based paint in homes have made sick hundreds of children in Utica city. Utica is the second city in frequency of lead poisoning per 100 kids tested. (1st one is New York). However, Utica city has been granted $2 million in federal stimulus money in order to cleanup the homes that contain lead-based paint. The grant was announced by Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente, Jr., Congressman Michael Arcuri and Utica Mayor David Roefaro in a news conference on March 3 in Picente’s office. The stimulus fund will reimburse a 2008 Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant. According to the officials, the money will help cleanup the lead from approximately 200 homes, mainly in West Utica and Cornhill. The city has to hire local contractors to perform the cleanup. According to Congressman Arcuri, the money has to reach Utica within the next few days. He said it may take up to three years to complete the abatement in all the homes.
