An Orange County based lawfirm is suing Coleman over personal injury caused to Trevor Dennis, a young boy who sustained severe burns in consequence of a defective propane heater made by Coleman. The lawsuit filed in the Orange County Superior Court states that the defective Coleman heater caused Trevor’s trailer to catch on fire at the Octillo Wells Desert Recreation Area during a family camping trip in December 2005. Trevor was 7 years old then. On account of the burn injuries Trevor suffered, he requires constant medical care even now, according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Trevor and his mother Alysha Reed. Coleman was the maker of the ProCat (TM) PerfecTemp (TM) (Model 5053), the faulty propane heater. The plaintiffs argue that Coleman intentionally used defective parts and faulty design in its heaters, which resulted in Trevor’s devastating injuries. Trevor’s attorney said defective design, substandard critical parts from Chinese suppliers, a sloppy assembly and poor quality control used by Coleman resulted in a catastrophic injury of a young boy. The suit also states that the company claimed in their ads that the propane heater was safe indoors, though actually it was not. According to the plaintiffs, Coleman was aware that its propane heaters were faulty on account of prior complaints and incident reports. However, the company didn’t recall their faulty products and kept on selling them, the suit claims. Coleman heaters have been linked to many carbon monoxide deaths. Two product liability lawsuits had been filed on December 14, 2006 claiming that Coleman PowerMate 5045 propane heater was the main reason which led to the death of five people.
