The grandmother of a deceased infant is suing Touchette Regional Hospital and Dr. Hee Song, alleging that the baby died of neurological injury after taking excessive dose of Cytotec. Sharon Bass has filed a lawsuit on May 6 in individually and as special administrator of the estate of her grandson. According to the lawsuit, Bass’s daughter Alisha Williams was admitted to Touchette on May 7, 2007 for the delivery of her child (Michael Brown Jr.). Alisha was under the care of Dr. Song all through her delivery. Brown, who was born on May 8, 2007, suffered neurological damage and died on November 16, 2007. According the complaint, Brown was died of complications from his neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. The suit accuses that hospital employees failed to make an ample assessment of the fecal monitor tracing, failed to treat Brown for abnormal tracing and administered an excessive dose of Cytotec. The complaint also states that the hospital failed to use terbutaline in a correct manner and failed to carry out a cesarean section when it was indicated. Sharon complaints that the hospital should not have allowed admission privileges to Dr. Song as he was not qualified to manage labor and delivery. For managing Alisha’s labor and delivery, the hospital should have called another physician instead, the suit claims. Sharon argues that Song was guilty of negligence by failing to carry out a cesarean section when it was indicated, by suggesting the wrong use of Cytotec, by failing to treat Alisha during his delivery, by failing to appropriately interpret fetal monitor heart strips, by failing to get a timely consultation, by causing Williams’s uterus to become hyperstimulated, by failing to properly assess Alisha in a timely manner and by failing to use terbutaline during Alisha’s delivery. Bass is seeking a compensation of $300,000, in addition to expenses.
