A Chambers County man’s family is suing 67 defendant corporations claiming the man was died of acute myelogenous leukemia as a result of benzene exposure. Michael Johnson died from the disease on 2nd March, 2007. The lawsuit was filed Feb. 27 in Jefferson County District Court. According to the lawsuit, Johnson worked from 1968 until 2007 as a pipefitter, pipefitter welder, boilermaker and mechanical supervisor. ExxonMobil, Air Liquide, Atlantic Richfield, BASF, BP Amaco, Dow Chemical, Foster Wheeler, Goodyear, KBR, Monsanto, S&B Engineers, Shell, Union Carbide, U.S. Steel, Valero and the Washington Group are some of the defendants. The complaint states that the defendants were aware of chemical emissions. They were aware of the hazards of benzene exposure, but still released the pollutant in the air, the lawsuit states. The suit claims that Johnson became ill as a result of his benzene exposure in the workplace. Johnson’s family argues that the disease caused them to incur substantial medical costs. Johnson suffered from great physical pain, mental anguish, physical impairment and disfigurement as a result of the disease. The family incurred funeral and burial expenses as well, the suit states. Johnson’s family is seeking an unspecified amount of compensation, plus interest, costs and any other relief to which they may be entitled. 58th District Court Judge Bob Wortham has been assigned the case.
