The family of a man, who died after developing myeloma following his exposure to benzene and benzene-containing products, is suing chemical giant Chevron in Jefferson County District Court. Luther Wesley was exposed to benzene and benzene-containing products while working at Texaco in Jefferson County, according to the lawsuit filed June 19 by Wesley’s wife Patricia Miller and children Christine Goodman and Alison Miller. The suit states that Wesley developed multiple myeloma as a result of the exposure and died a painful and terrible death on Feb. 7, 2008. The plaintiffs argue that Chevron was aware of the fact that benzene can cause deadly blood conditions and cancers, but they still allowed the employees to work around the hazardous chemical. The suit also states that Chevron failed to warn workers regarding the hazards of the chemicals and to take essential safety precautions to ensure that Luther Miller would not exposed to the dangerous pollutants. Wesley’s family is seeking unspecified exemplary and punitive damages in addition to interest, costs and any other relief to which they may be entitled. Judge Gary Sanderson of 60th District Court will be presiding over the case.
