The family of a deceased refinery worker is suing Texaco, an oil company now subsumed by Chevron, claiming the man’s death was caused by exposure to benzene and other carcinogens all through his career with the company. Joyce Granger, Karen Wells, Denise Murff, Debra Sims and Ronald Granger have filed a lawsuit against Texaco on 21st April in Jefferson County District Court. According to the plaintiffs, Willie Granger worked for Texaco and he was exposed to toxic benzene and benzene-containing products throughout his career. As a result of benzene exposure, Granger developed myeloid leukemia syndrome from which he died on Oct. 28, the complaint states. Granger’s family blames Texaco for a range of negligent acts. According to them, Texaco allowed Willie Granger to work around benzene though the company was aware its consequences; exposed Willie Granger to benzene; failed to aptly and adequately warn Willie Granger regarding the hazards of benzene exposure; and failed to take proper precautions to ensure that Willie Granger was not exposed to benzene. Granger’s family is seeking exemplary and punitive damages, in addition to interest at legal rate, costs and other relief that the court deems appropriate. Judge Donald Floyd, 172th District Court, will be presiding over the case.
