TX – The family of an east Texas man who died after taking blood thinner Heparin is suing the drug makers and the medical facility that administered the drug. According to a product liability lawsuit filed December 30 in the Beaumont Division of the Eastern District of Texas, Lloyd James Robinson was administered heparin while he was being treated at the Lufkin Dialysis center. The complaint states Robinson developed a hypersensitivity-type adverse reaction and died thereafter as a result of using the drug. Heparin is an injectable anticoagulant (blood thinner) used to prevent the formation of clots and extension of existing clots within the blood. The drug is produced by Baxter International using the active pharmaceutical ingredient made by Scientific Protein Laboratories in North America and China. The plaintiffs allege that the China facilities who made the drug did not meet U.S. regulations. Changzhou SPL Co., American Capital, B. Braun Medical, Tyco Healthcare Group, Covidien Inc., Medefil Inc., Becton, Dickinson and Co., Rental Treatment Centers-Southeast and Davita Inc. are the other defendants named in the lawsuit. Robinson’s family alleges that the defendants are negligent for failing to reveal the test results of the contaminated heparin, failing to act sensibly to recall the drugs and failing to act as a reasonably prudent drug manufacturer. Robinson’s family is seeking damages for medical expenses, loss of income, physical and mental pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, funeral and burial costs, loss of advice and counsel, loss of services, loss of inheritance and loss of companionship and society. The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Thad Heartfield.
