BELLOWS FALLS – Two village landlords, who failed to follow lead paint regulations of Vermont, have reached settlements with the attorney general’s office. Karuna Kress and Bruce and Patricia Waryas were ordered to pay $5,000 fines after they ignored to file paperwork with the Vermont Department of Health. Kress and Waryas own and rent apartments in Bellows Falls. Four other property owners also have been fined last week. They are Gary Gunther of Arlington, Harold Harvey of Williston, David Montesi of Proctorville and Kingdom Property Investment of Irasburg. The settlements were announced in a press release by the office of the attorney general. “Those who enter into agreements with the state of Vermont should live up to their end of the bargain or expect further enforcement by the state,” the PR read. Robert McDougall, the Assistant Attorney General, said each of the six landlords “Each of the six landlords had previously signed agreements with the health department to keep up on state requirements to either maintain their properties or file maintenance practice reports,” said Robert McDougall, the Assistant Attorney General. McDougall said the state is working on other cases of lead violations by landlords. “Lead paint is real serious health hazard. We’ve seen an increase in awareness from landlords who want to follow the lead law. The only way we can monitor their work is by having them file compliance statements and in these cases there were previous agreements,” McDougall said.
