Melamine-Contaminated Cookies found in New York Shelves

NEW YORK – The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (NYSDAM) discovered melamine-contaminated cookies on shelves in the state last week.

Lotte USA, the distributor of Koala’s March cream filled strawberry cookies, had recalled the product On Oct. 17 due to melamine contamination.

NYSDAM said that the samples they tested had the same UPC code as the cookies recalled by the distributor.

NYSDAM said it is typical with recalls of products that some store owners deliberately keep on carrying the recalled products, while some of them may not have heard of the recall.

Melamine is a highly resistant and extremely strong industrial chemical used as a plastic laminate material.

For years, melamine was purposely added to milk and milk-derived products by Chinese manufacturers because melamine is rich in nitrogen and it can make milk appear in tests as if it has high levels of protein.

Melamine-contaminated products from China remain a worry since September, when the Chinese government revealed that more than 53,000 infants were fatally sickened by melamine-contaminated milk. Later, the Chinese government admitted they lied about the number of sick infants and that the actual number of affected infants was approximately 300,000. Though the actual number is not known, it’s a fact that many Chinese infants died from melamine contamination.
