CHICAGO, April 29 (UPI) – According to some U.S. researchers, Children those consume melamine-contaminated milk powder are at high risk of developing kidney stones. As it can make milk appear to be rich in protein content (by uplifting the total nitrogen content), excess melamine has been an illegal adulterant for feedstock and milk in China for many years. Kidney stones occurred in children ages 6-18 months after consuming melamine-tainted milk powder after birth. Nevertheless, stones could be successfully handled with non-invasive treatment. Using ultrasound images, researchers studied the clinical data of 50 young children with double kidney stones who had a history of consuming melamine-tainted milk powder. 85 percent of the cases happened in children ages 6-18 months. A second study scrutinized 50 days to three years old infants who had a history of consuming melamine-contaminated milk powder. It was found that the peak incidence of urinary stones was found in children ages 6-12 months. 50.3 percent of these patients were asymptomatic, 16.9 percent suffered painful urination, 14.6 percent had infantile colic, 10.9 percent experienced decreased or absence of urine and 7.3 percent had blood in the urine.
