A study says Paxil and similar antidepressants could damage the sperm and evventually cause male infertility. The findings reveal that Paxil and other generally prescribed durgs for depression can break up DNA in sperm. Externally, the sperm may appear normal in number, shape and ability to swim. However, similar levels of DNA breakup in sperm can cause fertility as well as pregnancy problems. The Cornell Medical Center in New York City says that less embryos form when the man’s sperm has damaged DNA for couples undergoing In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment. “The obvious raise in sperm DNA damage is shocking, although the level at which we think the damage becomes clinically significant is controversial to several scientists,” said Dr Allan Pacey, senior lecturer in andrology at the University of Sheffield. He said it is a shame that the authors appear not to have carried out a randomised controlled trial which would be the the most scientific way to determine the effects of the drug. “However, the results are of great concern and must be investigated,” he said. Paxil (generically known as paroxetine) was introduced to market by GlaxoSmithKline in 1992. By 2006, Paxil was the fifth most-commonly prescribed antidepressant in the US, with more than 19.7 million prescriptions.
