SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse city has received grant from the state to help prevent lead poisoning in children. The Onondaga County Health Department Tuesday met at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo to reply any queries about hazards of lead and how to prevent it. Under the new pilot program, those who are living in high risk areas of Syracuse (areas within zip codes 13204, 13205 and 13208) would be given free home inspections and lead cleaning kits. Syracuse is a place where lead poisoning risk is extremely high because almost all houses in Syracuse were built before 1970. One in ten children living at high risk areas has lead poisoning. “Unfortunately, lead poisoning is a silent disease at the start. It affects the child’s neuro development. Lead poisoning can cause learning disabilities, cognitive dysfunction and behavioral problems in a child,” said Cynthia Morrow, Health Commissioner of Onondaga County. Morrow said that all children must be tested for lead poisoning at the age of one or two, as per New York state law.
