A deceased refinery worker’s wife is suing oil giant Chevron USA, claiming that the company exposed her husband to benzene.

Louise Parker has filed a personal injury lawsuit on behalf of Ray Parker on November 23 in Jefferson County District Court.

The lawsuit says that Parker was an employee of Gulf Oil (which was later acquired by Chevron).

According to the lawsuit, Parker was exposed to toxic benzene all through his career and, as a result, developed multiple myeloma and myelodysplastic from which he died on December 22, 2008.

Parker’s employment duration and nature of work in Gulf Oil have not been mentioned clearly in the lawsuit.

The suit states that Chevron was aware for decades that benzene exposure might result in deadly blood conditions and cancer, still allowed its employees to work with and around benzene products.

Mrs. Parker also alleges Chevron didn’t warn workers promptly regarding the hazards of benzene and failed to take necessary safety measures. The suit also states that the company didn’t provide adequate training to its employees to ensure that the deceased was not exposed.

The plaintiff is seeking exemplary damages. 172nd Judicial District Judge Donald Floyd will be presiding over the case.
