MADISON – Wisconsin state will receive more than $6.7 million in stimulus funds for programs focused on removing lead out from homes. This allowance will support the Healthy Homes Projects and Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control Program. Healthy Homes Projects works to minimize environmental risk factors in homes and Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control Program helps state and local officials to spot and manage lead hazards in homes. The main source lead exposure is old lead paint, which may be consumed by children when crumbled into dust. According to a report, lead paint has poisoned approximately 44,000 Wisconsin children since 1996. The report also says, in 2006, 4.7 percent - at least one student in almost every class across the state - of Wisconsin kindergarten students had lead poisoning. Governor Doyle said that the state care about protecting families, homes and children in Wisconsin. “Too many children have already been harmed by lead paint or other hazards and this money is crucial to allowing us to help make our homes safer. These grants will support childhood lead poisoning prevention activities and allow for the control of lead hazards in as many as 321 homes and quickly protect 480 children. They also represent another economic tool for our state and will create jobs for hardworking Wisconsin families,” He said.
