Woman Sues 4 Companies over Chemical Release

A Port Arthur woman is suing four Texas companies, claiming she experienced physical pain and suffering on account of chemicals released into the air after two vessels owned by the defendants collided.

Emma White argues she lived close to the Sabine-Neches Waterway on January 23 when two vessels collided and released chemicals and petrochemicals into the air. The defendants American Eagle Tankers, Exxon Mobil Corp, Sabine Pilot Service and Dixie Carriers own the vessels.

According to the lawsuit filed March 10 in Jefferson County District Court, a towing vessel (the Dixie Vengeance) owned and operated by Dixie Carriers collided with an 807-foot tank ship (Eagle Otome) owned by American Eagle Tankers, chartered by Exxon Mobil Corp. and operated by Sabine Pilot Service. The suit further states that large volumes of hydrogen sulfate and other hazardous chemicals were released into the environment as a result of the collision.

White argues that she experienced mental anguish, physical impairment and personal discomfort and incurred medical costs due to the incident.

The suit blames the defendants for their negligence, gross negligence and private nuisance.

White is seeking an unspecified amount as damages, in addition to costs, interest and other relief the court deems appropriate.

Judge Bob Wortham, 58th District Court, will be presiding over the case.
