Diseases > Clostridium difficile Infections

Clostridium difficile is a bacterium that causes diarrhea and more severe intestinal conditions such as colitis. It is said that new versions of this bacterium create 20 times more toxin than the older version. Clostridium difficile is the most common cause of infectious diarrhea in hospitalized patients in the modern world.

A recent study in Quebec indicates that Clostridium difficile is one of the most common infections in hospitals and long-term care facilities. The study states that Clostridium difficile was indirectly responsible for 108 deaths during a six-month period.

People over the age of 65 years are more susceptible to contracting infection.

Chances of developing Clostridium difficile diarrhea are increased by the use of antibiotics. Approximately 400,000 case of severe diarrhea are linked to clostridium difficile every year. Clostridium difficile can be fatal at times.

The effects of Clostridium difficile can vary from nothing to diarrhea of varying severity and much more unusually to severe inflammation of the bowel. Symptoms include:

  • Watery diarrhea (three or more bowel movements per day for at least two days)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever
  • Abdominal pain/tenderness
  • Nausea
