Painkiller Patches Recalled

Pain patches containing the prescription painkiller fentanyl are being recalled due to a manufacturing defect that could cause patients or caregivers to overdose on the potent drug.

The pain patch is reported to have a cut in the lining allowing the fentanyl gel to leak and come into direct contact resulting in an increased drug effect or overdose. Overdoses of fentanyl have been linked to respiratory failure and cardiac arrest.

Signs of Duragesic – Fentanyl overdose include trouble breathing or shallow breathing, feeling faint or confused, drowsiness, sedation, inability to think, talk walk normally, or potentially life threatening complications. If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms seek immediate medical attention.

Introduced in 1990 and marketed under the brand name Duragesic, the pain patch is placed on the skin to deliver the drug fentanyl. The Duragesic patch has a membrane that allows a painkilling gel to be absorbed through the skin over a period of three days. Generic versions of the pain patch containing fentanyl have also been approved by the FDA and are now on the market.

Fentanyl, is a powerful narcotic (opioid) painkiller most commonly prescribed for patients to combat the excruciating and chronic pain of cancer.
The FDA issued a safety warning in December due to the fact that many patients and healthcare providers were unaware of the dangerous side effects caused by the powerful painkiller, fentanyl.

Duragesic pain patches were also recalled in 2004 due to a manufacturing defect allowing fentanyl to leak from the pain patch. The danger from a defective leaking pain patch could be a life threatening overdose.
