Meridia is a popular diet aid. Meridia is the brand name of the generic drug sibutramine hydrochloride monohydrate. It regulates chemicals in the appetite center in the brain to cause a temporary reduction in hunger for food. Meridia is used for treating obesity. Meridia works by boosting levels of certain chemical messengers in the nervous system, including serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Meridia in November 1997 for the long-term treatment of obesity. The drug is manufactured by Abbott Laboratories. They also sell the drug in Europe under the brand names Reductil, Reduxade, and Ectiva.

Public Citizen says that 397 serious adverse reactions were reported to the FDA since Meridia has been approved. 152 required hospitalization and 143 of those hospitalized had irregular heartbeats.
