Drugs & Devices > Zicam

Zicam is an over the counter homeopathic intranasal zinc remedy meant to reduce the length of a cold. The drug is either taken in a spray or a swab. Matrixx Initiatives, Inc., the manufacturer of Zicam, claims that using Zicam can cause cold symptoms to be less severe and heal the common cold up to three times sooner than normal.

Health risks associated to Zicam

The popularity of Zicam is rising. However, most of the consumers are unaware of its potential risks. According to some reports, an increasing number of people are reporting Zicam side effects such as anosmia, the total loss of the sense of smell. It has been proved that these Zicam side effects are directly linked to zinc gluconate, a key element in the homeopathic cold remedy.

Following are some of the side effects of Zicam:

  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Bad taste
  • Nausea
  • Dehydration
  • Restlessness

Zicam Lawsuit

Several lawsuits have been filed against the drug maker Matrixx Initiatives, Inc. and Zicam LLC, the developers and distributors of Zicam. A 2003 lawsuit alleges that Zicam caused a partial loss of smell. Filing a lawsuit can help the victim to win a reasonable payout. Company says that there are no side effects to be alarmed about. A February 2004 Dow Jones Newswire article reported the FDA was investigating consumer complaints regarding zinc gluconate induced loss of smell. Immediately after that, Matrixx Initiatives said that they were not aware of an FDA inquiry into the safety of its Zicam products and potential Zicam side effects.

If you are suffering from a side effect after using Zicam, you must stop your use of the remedy at once and contact a physician and an attorney.
